2nd XV Match Reports

Woodcrest Landscapes The Traveller

Flyde 5ths 12 Vs Carnforth 2nds 15

Carnforth journeyed down to Fylde to restart their season after last weeks brief break, (when they had an outstanding 29-0 win against Upper Eden in a friendly). Carnforth were suffering from quite a few injuries but still managed to retain a full squad for this fixture, led once again by King Edie (aka Lionheart) this pride of lions were hungry for another victory.

Carnforth started well from the kick off with winger Morgan pouncing on the catcher, unfortunately injuring himself in the process. After playing on for a few minutes he was replaced by Harwood. Good runs were made by the shuffled pack of Moorfoot, Collins, Hodgson, Ewan, TJ, Evans, Bennet & Albiston enabling the backs to gain some purchase into the Fylde defence. A classic linkup between Porter & Whittham saw Whittham break the Fylde defence and sprint through for a try in the corner.

This was quickly followed up by great penetrating runs from Etherington, Albiston & debutant Bennet. After several more good runs a pass from Holden to Skipper Edmondson, saw Edmonson run along Fylde’s back line handing off each and every player and finally placing the ball down for Carnforth’s 2nd try.

Fylde fought back in the final minutes of the second half and succeeded in earning themselves a try, and a missed conversion, leaving the score at half time 5-10.

Carnforth remained the same with no substitutions at half time. Whereas a desperate Fylde made two & then a third quickly after play resumed. This seemed to bolster the Fylde pack & defence but with Carnforth’s forwards winning most of the scrums & with Evans leaping like a salmon finding its way back up stream to spawn, they secured the lions share of the line-outs as well.

With a penalty on the 22, Carnforth sought to extend the lead but were denied by a cruel wind. A returning Rabbet replaced an injured Harwood for the remainder of this half.

Another blistering run from the captain saw Carnforth secure another try, which was nearly closely followed by another from Edmonson, but he was denied his hat trick just short of the line. Winger Etherington was replaced by another Carnforth debutant Andy Newton.

Carnforth fought on for the second half resisting all of Fylde’s advances, until unfortunately the persistent Fylde side broke through the Carnforth Backs and managed to claw back some of Carnforth’s Lead with a try & conversion.

Carnforth spent the remainder of the half camped in Fylde’s 22, determined not to let anything through. With the final whistle Carnforth had secured yet another victory on their path to league supremacy.

Carnforth’s second team now begin a long run of home fixtures leading up to Christmas, starting next week with Chorley, with the earlier winter kick off time of 2.30pm.
